Huaypo and Piuray twins
This legend says that the Sun god Inti asked Manco Cápac if his twin children could join him at sunset. So, he called for his two children, but they searched tirelessly for them without success. Suddenly, in the distance, they saw two new lagoons almost side by side.
The Sun God called upon the nearby Apus, protectors of all, revealing that two lost children were crying endlessly. Their sadness was so intense that they drowned in their own tears, becoming two lagoons.
Manco Cápac felt devastated for not hurrying his search, as his children had now become two lagoons. The son became the Huaypo Lagoon, and the daughter the Piuray Lagoon. The waters of both lagoons hold the memories of that time, and when tasting the waters of both, they were sweet.
Huaypo’s old man
This story is more popular among the people living near Huaypo Lagoon. According to this legend, there was once a very prosperous town where Huaypo Lagoon is now, and its façades were decorated with gold and precious stones.
One day, a very humble old man arrived at one of the town’s festivals, looking for something to eat. The townspeople ignored him and refused him food. The man continued searching for someone with a good heart, but everyone was blinded by greed, lust, and money.
Suddenly, a woman offered him food and shelter. Then, he revealed his face and told her to leave the town that night. He was a messenger of the sun; he was sent to test the people. The woman took her child and promised not to look back.
The town began to fill with water as the woman ran with her child to the highest point, not daring to look back. However, the screams and sobs of the townspeople made her turn, and she was turned to stone. Today, you can see a huge stone that seems to look toward the Lake, and people say it’s the woman from the legend.
