Peru’s Sacred Valley in Cusco, the heart of what was the vast and powerful Inca Empire, is a set of charming villages and towns that offer a wide variety in culture, food, discoveries, and people.
However, one common thing that these villages might share is the traditional markets scattered through this lush valley.
On your trip to the sacred valley, probably your first stop will be Pisac. This charming little town exudes culture and tradition everywhere.
From its cobblestone alleys, the delicious frutillada, or the breathtaking Pisac Archaeological complex, impressive for its agricultural terraces and well-conserved state. Definitely, it’s Inca ingenuity at its best.
Nonetheless, you are here because of the markets, and let me tell you that Pisac has a big one, the Pisac Market or the Artisan Market.
Some locals offer their work here, as some of them do silver jewelry, food, arts and crafts, and more. Therefore, let’s dive into the reasons why visiting the Pisac market is a must-visit. Let’s go!
The Pisac market, an authentic experience
Silver and Metal Jewelry
Locals and Artisans from Cusco and its surroundings are well-known for their stunning metalwork. In this market, you can find handmade necklaces, bracelets, rings, and other accessories that mix classic techniques with modern styles. Each piece has its own charm!
Textiles and Clothing
Pisac’s colorful textiles are a true delight! Local weavers use traditional methods such as natural dyes to create beautiful ponchos, blankets, and shawls from alpaca wool and cotton. Not only are these pieces striking, but they also keep you warm and cozy.
Ceramics and Pottery
The hand-painted ceramics in Pisac are truly a delightful treasure! From practical dishes to charming decorative items, each piece tells a unique story about Andean myths and traditions.
You’re sure to discover something special in every design! Many items in Pisac feature beautiful Incan symbols.
From amulets to small sculptures, each piece highlights the rich and vibrant culture of Cusco. They make wonderful gifts or cherished keepsakes!
Food and Drinks
Cusco’s food scene is as rich as its culture, and the Pisac Market is a fantastic place to explore various delicious flavors:
The food stalls serve up tasty traditional dishes like tamales, empanadas, or cakes. They are perfect for anyone wanting to try local cuisine!
Fresh Fruits and Produce
Thanks to the fertile valley, Pisac offers a wide range of fresh native fruits and vegetables, many grown by the vendors themselves. You’ll love the vibrant colors and flavors!
Don’t miss out on the handmade sweets made from corn, quinoa, and other local ingredients. They are a delightful way to add some sweetness to your day at the market!
Traditional Beverages
Be sure to try traditional drinks like frutillada or chicha de jora. These beverages have been enjoyed by Andean people for generations and are a real treat!
And there’s more
Festive Atmosphere
During holidays and special occasions, the market comes alive with music, dance, and celebrations. You can enjoy lively performances by folk groups playing traditional Andean music, making the atmosphere truly festive!
Cultural Interaction
The friendly relationship between vendors and buyers creates a warm and welcoming vibe. Artisans love to share the stories behind their creations, allowing you to dive deeper into Andean culture and learn about the area’s history.
Souvenirs and Keepsakes
From t-shirts featuring Incan-inspired designs to unique decorative items, the market is the perfect spot to find special souvenirs that capture the spirit of the Sacred Valley.
In certain areas of the market, you can watch live demonstrations of traditional techniques like weaving, wood carving, or pottery. These displays give you a close-up look at the skill and artistry of local artisans.
The Sunday Market
And, yes, there’s even more. If you make it on Sundays, you must come by the plaza, or as locals call it, “plaza constitucion”.
From very early in the morning, locals and people from the surrounding areas of Pisac come to offer their products. Vendors in brightly colored, traditional clothing set up stalls, each filled with unique and exciting offerings.
Imagine rows of cozy ponchos, scarves, and hats made from soft alpaca wool. Each piece showcases beautiful geometric patterns that tell the rich stories of Andean culture.
You’ll find stunning silver jewelry with intricate designs, charming hand-painted ceramics, and even natural powders that can be used as watercolor paints. These delightful treasures are a wonderful surprise that you won’t often see!
Some Tips to keep in mind
Be an early bird. Especially on weekends, the markets tend to be crowded with tourists. (If you don’t want to miss anything on the Sunday market, then you must be up very early ) So, our recommendation is to visit days of the week or in the morning from 9 am.
Bargain is ok but… Yeah, in whole Peru bargain is ok, but do it respectfully. Don’t try to get a cheaper price if it’s a quality article, for example. Lots of families around make a living from souvenirs, so keep that in mind.
Don’t forget your camera. This market is full of a great world of art, not only for what the vendors are offering, but also for the market decoration itself. Don’t forget to ask for a picture from the vendors, even more so if you don’t buy anything
Take cash. Some Peruvian soles will save you, as in some stalls, this is the only way to buy some souvenirs. Keep your card in hand, but always bring some soles with you
Pisac market will captivate you, and if you visit on Sunday, the Sunday market too. We really hope you can have a great time not only in the Sacred Valley, but also in Peru.
