6 Amazing Lakes (and more) in Peru You Shouldn’t Miss

Water is an essential component of life and can be found practically everywhere. Along the way, it forms lagoons, lakes, rivers, and even waterfalls in Peru, traveling from the snow-capped peaks of the Andes to the coast to the vast and mysterious rain forest.

Either seismic shifts—which result from the Earth’s crust sinking—or glaciers—which melt snow from the mountains—formed Peru’s lakes and lagoons.

Water even reaches the parched coastal regions, where it creates lagoons and oases. Whether sky blue, deep blue, green, or turquoise, water brings life wherever it goes, nourishing towns, generating energy, supporting crops, providing habitats for fish, and fulfilling other essential human needs.

Thanks to this wonderful nature process, Peru has several beautiful lakes within its territory, so, join us as we explore the 6 most beautiful lakes in Peru’s three regions. Dare to visit all of them when you come to Peru, let’s dive in!.

Laguna 69

If you love trekking and stunning landscapes, a visit to Huaraz and Laguna 69 is a must. Located in Huascarán National Park, Laguna 69 is one of the most beautiful lagoons in Peru, renowned for its turquoise waters and breathtaking views of the Andes.

It takes roughly three hours to finish the six kilometers (3.7 miles) of hiking to Laguna 69. Since its location is more than 4000 meters,  4,600 meters above sea level, to be precise,  you should acclimatize for a day or two in beforehand. During the hike, you can also chew coca leaves to prevent altitude sickness.

The journey features stunning scenery, including snowy peaks, waterfalls, and the sounds of birds. Upon reaching the lagoon, you’ll have about an hour to relax, enjoy snacks, and take pictures of the incredible landscape.

Laguna 69 is a highlight of the Huaraz area, attracting thousands of travelers each year. Whether you want to picnic or simply soak in the natural beauty, this adventure promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Peruvian Andes.

Llanganuco Lakes

You can find this beautiful group of lakes also in Huaraz, called Peru’s Trekking Capital. Huaraz is so special thanks to its geography, as it’s located in the middle of the beautiful “Cordillera Blanca”, or white mountain range.

This group of mountains features 17 peaks that rise over 6,000 meters and boasts more than 500 lakes, making it a perfect spot for trekking. One of the highlights is the stunning Laguna de Llanganuco, where two lovely lakes are nestled among majestic mountains.

Llanganuco consists of twin lakes, Chinancocha, and Orconcocha. Chinancocha, known as the “female lagoon,” and Orconcocha as the male one. Both sit at the base of Huascarán, Peru’s tallest mountain.  Its turquoise waters reflect the impressive peaks around it. Orconcocha, might require a bit more effort to reach, but the peaceful beauty it offers is absolutely worth it.

Lake Humantay

Humantay Lake is the breathtaking turquoise lagoon nestled in the Cusco region, sitting at more than 4,000 meters above sea level. It’s beautifully surrounded by the majestic Humantay and Salkantay mountains.

The lake’s vibrant color comes from the meltwater of the nearby glaciers, creating a dreamy landscape that attracts visitors worldwide.  For the local people, this lake is special and holds spiritual meaning as it is linked to Salkantay Apu, a revered protector deity in Inca culture.

The trek to Humantay Lake is moderately challenging and starts in Soraypampa, taking you about two hours to complete the trek. Although the way has partially steep climbs, we assure you you’ll enjoy your visit fully.  To avoid altitude sickness, we recommend spending a few days in Cusco to help you get used to high altitude.

Although the trek may be tough in some parts, the stunning view of the clear, emerald waters surrounded by towering mountains makes it all worthwhile. If you’re looking for an adventure, Humantay Lake is also a highlight of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. This natural wonder is definitely a must-visit for anyone exploring the beautiful Peruvian Andes!

Sandoval Lake

We have our list first lake that isn’t in the Andes, actually is in the heart of the jungle rainforest. The Lake Sandoval is located in the Tambopata National Reserve, in the Madre de Dios department. In its 3,000 square kilometers, you can enjoy boat rides to take in the scenery and wildlife, such as caimans and turtles, or go on guided hikes through the jungle. A must-see stop is Monkey Island, where these playful animals freely interact with visitors.

To reach Lake Sandoval, you need to travel to Puerto Maldonado, take a boat along the Madre de Dios River, and then hike for about an hour. A visit to Lake Sandoval will immerse you in the tranquility and biodiversity of the Peruvian jungle, with experiences like night hikes and panoramic views from a hanging bridge.

These lagoons, formed by the melting of the Ausangate glacier, sit over 4,500 meters above sea level and offer breathtaking scenery with their turquoise and emerald waters surrounded by majestic mountains.

The journey begins in Pacchanta, a small Andean village known for its peaceful landscapes and medicinal hot springs. From there, adventurers embark on a hike to explore the seven lagoons: Patacocha, Pucacocha, Alcacocha, Orco Otorongo, Comercocha, Azul Cocha, and China Otorongo.

Each lagoon has its own unique beauty, framed by the snowy peaks of Ausangate, the sixth-highest mountain in Peru. This trek is perfect for nature lovers seeking an adventure off the beaten path. The mix of Andean landscapes, local wildlife, and the grandeur of Ausangate makes it a truly unique destination.

Huacachina is an oasis in the middle of the Peruvian desert in the Ica region. Huacachina Lagoon stands out among Peru’s many attractions with its sand dunes, emerald oasis, and incredible stories. This destination perfectly balances relaxation and extreme sports.

The Huacachina oasis is five kilometers west of Ica, and 4 hours from the Peruvian capital, Lima. You can access it easily by bus or taxi. Interestingly, this lake has its own legend, the “Huacca China princess” legend.

In a few words, she became a mermaid after throwing herself into the lagoon, weeping for her lost love. The water turned green, reflecting her and possessing healing powers.

At Huacachina Lagoon, enjoy thrilling boat rides, sandboarding on the dunes, and exhilarating buggy rides. Enjoy the desert’s stunning views on sunset walks, then, explore the lively nightlife along the shores. The bars and bonfires are perfect for stargazing.
