Should you travel in high season or lower season?

Many people consider the high travel season the ideal time to visit Peru. When compared to the off-season, its most popular locations have very distinct events, settings, and moods.

Peru’s peak season is ideal for touring the Andes mountains. It coincides with the dry season. You can see Rainbow Mountain and Colca Canyon. And, you can visit Machu Picchu and go on the four-day Inca trail tour.

This is also a great time of year to explore the Amazon jungle in Peru. As there is less rain than there is during the rainy season, animals stay near waterways, and the total mosquito population is lower.

The average temperature is between 20 and 23°C on pleasant, sunny days. A T-shirt and a cap are all you need for the mornings, but it’s a good idea to apply sunscreen since it might burn this time of year. On the other side, evenings and nights are colder, and temperatures can drop significantly in June and July during the dry season.

The large number of travelers visiting popular places during this time of year is one disadvantage. It becomes challenging to enjoy the scenery, snap photos, or be in the company of many strangers.

On the other hand, low-season matches with wet or rainy season. In the Cusco area, there is sporadic mist and chilly weather. In the rainy season, there are showers of rain.

The region turns green, bringing the surrounding scenery to life. Cusco, for example, is still quite appealing at this time of year, even though it might not be as sunny as the dry season.

Traveling to Cusco in January and February is highly recommended if you don’t mind a little rain. You’ll see fewer people around and the landscape is breathtaking. Plan your excursions appropriately, as the Inca Trails are closed in February for restoration.

Whether you’re trying to travel in the dry or wet season, consider it with your partner. In the end, you’ll enjoy Peru in your style.

Don’t Worry About Altitude Sickness

When your body can’t adjust to the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes, it gets altitude sickness, sometimes called acute mountain sickness (AMS). Altitude sickness is common in Peru due to its high altitudes. This is especially true in places like Cusco, where elevations can reach over 3,400 meters above sea level.

Take it easy for your first day or two in Cusco after arrival. Allow enough time for your body to adjust to the altitude before starting any hard activities. Choose a lodge with enough ventilation. It helps ease altitude sickness.

Coca tea and leaves are two of the many products that could aid in preventing altitude sickness effects. Don’t worry as coca tea and derived products such as candy, chocolates, or medicine are totally legal here in Peru. For more information about altitude sickness look at this blog.

Safety Tips to Consider When in Peru

Even though we’ve traveled to Peru is generally safe, it’s always a good idea to take common-sense measures.

  • We don’t recommend traveling alone at night, especially in less inhabited or poorly lit areas.  Refrain from walking alone at night. To improve your safety, choose busy, well-lit locations where you are less likely to encounter hazards.
  • Also, it’s best to avoid walking after dark. Instead, use reliable transportation like licensed taxis.

  • Choose a reputable cab service to stay safe. Make a reservation with a good business instead of hailing one.
  • Credit cards are widely used. But it’s recommended that you take extra cash as a backup, especially when traveling to more distant places. There, card payment options may be limited.
  • Automated teller machines (ATMs) are widespread in Peru, making it easy for visitors to get local cash. When withdrawing money from an ATM, choose those located in well-trafficked and secure areas, such as reputed banks or retail malls.
