Traditional Markets in Cusco: Culture and Tradition Alive

Markets are an important component of Peru’s rich cultural heritage, and Cusco is not an exception. These colorful places are packed with history, tradition, and pleasant surprises. After exploring Cusco’s sights, streets, and archaeological sites, why not visit these intriguing markets? Although you can see markets almost everywhere in Peru, this time we’ll focus on Cusco.

Viagens Machu Picchu has curated a list of the most traditional and popular markets in Cusco, where you can find everything from authentic traditional dishes to intricate handmade souvenirs. Join us as we dive into the rich world of Cusco’s markets, cherished by locals and travelers alike. But first, let’s explore why these markets are so important to Cusqueños.

Why Markets are so important for Cusqueños?

The Incas passed down many customs, foods, and medicinal plants that are still cherished today. For these reasons and more, Cusco’s markets are worth a visit. One more important reason you must know is that markets encourage you to use your senses: You can see things, smell a variety of aromas, touch textures, listen to the vibrant sounds of vendors and local artisans, or have a tasty treat.

When in markets, just remember this tip: Some vendors might start with a higher price, especially if they see you are a tourist. It’s a good idea to bargain with them. (Remember that bargaining is an everyday habit in Peru) And while Cusco is generally safe, it’s always wise to keep an eye on your belongings in busy areas.

Now, let’s explore the markets you definitely don’t want to miss on your next trip to Peru’s historic capital. Each traditional market in Cusco has its own story, unique items to discover, and delicious regional foods to try. Let’s go!

San Blas Fair

Welcome to Cusco’s vibrant “hipster” market, right in the city’s bohemian district! Every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., be sure to visit the San Blas Handicraft Fair in the square in front of San Blas Church. Near the Plaza de Armas, this fair is a wonderful chance to meet the city’s talented artisans and artists, who proudly showcase their beautiful textiles, paintings, and intricate wood and stone carvings.

The San Blas neighborhood is an interesting place to explore! Besides the craft fair, you can visit the market, where you can try local dishes that will satisfy your taste buds. This neighborhood celebrates its saint, San Blas, with joyful festivities, including masses, processions, and vibrant fireworks displays. It’s a wonderful experience you won’t want to miss!

Huancaro Market

Although this market is aimed at locals, you can visit it to get a glimpse of local culture in Cusco. Here, you can find fresh products sold directly by the producers themselves. If you want to discover a wide range of items and learn about their origins, be sure to visit the Huancaro Fair on Saturdays.

This market also is a great place to support local farmers year-round. They offer organic products, some of them considered “superfoods” that can bring benefits to your routine. Come and explore this market—you might be pleasantly surprised!

Wanchaq Market

While it may not be as bustling as other Cusco and Peruvian markets, Wanchaq Market offers a fantastic sensory experience. This lively fair center is filled with native fruits and spices from Peru. Feel free to ask the friendly vendors for samples of different fruits and choose your favorites to take home. You will also come across a variety of medicinal and culinary herbs, such as coca, mint, and muña.

These herbs are perfect for brewing soothing infusions that support digestion. If you’re in the mood for delicious and healthy fruit juice, this is your place! We recommend the “jugo especial” because is the most substantial, thick, and flavorful of all! In the food stalls, you can find the best of Peruvian street food. There is so much you can explore here!

Pisac Artisan Market

This time we’ll go outside Cusco, to the Sacred Valley, in Pisac town. In the artisan market, you can enjoy a colorful and lively atmosphere. As you stroll through the market, you can see the incredible talent of Pisac’s artisans. You can explore beautiful handwoven textiles, unique silver jewelry, and other traditional crafts. Each piece reflects the craftsmanship and techniques passed down through generations.

A Window into Pisac’s Heritage Pisac offers more than just shopping. Nearby, the Pisac Archaeological Center sits high above at over 3,200 meters. This amazing site provides a peek into the impressive Inca civilization and its complex cosmovision.

A Sacred Connection The Vilcanota River floats carefully through the Sacred Valley, offering beautiful views from the tops of Pisac. This river saw the birth and fall of the Inca Empire, and it now represents the valley’s enduring beauty and rich history.

San Pedro Market

Finally, we have the best: San Pedro Market in Cusco is the most popular and traditional of all. This lively and welcoming place showcases Cusco’s rich culture and traditions. Established in 1925 and located near the beautiful Church of San Pedro, this market offers much more than just fresh produce.

This market invites you on a delightful sensory journey through Cusco, and the unique structure, designed by the renowned French architect Gustave Eiffel, adds a charming element to the city’s landscape. Food lovers will feel right at home here!

The market features a fantastic variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and traditional Peruvian dishes like ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa limeña.  As you wander through, you’ll enjoy the vibrant colors and tempting aromas of local produce, giving you a genuine taste of Cusco.

But that’s not all! The market also highlights the skills of local artisans. You can find beautifully handmade souvenirs like textiles, pottery, jewelry, and other crafts. It’s a wonderful spot to pick up unique souvenirs that reflect the local culture.
