Calca is located in the heart of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/destinations\/sacred-valley-of-the-incas\">Sacred Valley<\/a><\/strong>, people from there honor \u201cPachamama\u201d or Mother Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The part of the eastern mountain range and one of the most outstanding high Andean zones is in the Calca area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alluvial cones are formed as a result of steep slopes and other circumstances. Also, pre-Hispanic Andean thought associated the Sawasiray-Pitusiray mountain with farming and herding rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Legend<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Andean myths and legends describe sacred encounters of feminine and male parties. One of them is this legend that goes like this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orqo Waranqa was a \u201ckuranka\u201d,\u00a0 a chief of Inca times in Urco village. This chief had a daughter called Pitusiray. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, Pitusiray grew into a beautiful maiden, and her father looked at her with great joy.\u00a0 Later, Pitusiray fell in love with a handsome young man named Sawasiray. She loved him so much that she gave him her heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the maiden was so beautiful, she had many suitors who wanted to marry her, and they went to ask her father for his consent. Kuntisiray, Sawasiray&#8217;s rival, was a lord of neighboring regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Unfair competition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They competed for this nearly impossible task because of the challenging terrain. Sawasiray tried to guide the water down the hill, but he failed for the short time he had left.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Kuntisiray dug an extensive well atop a hill, water began to flow down a ravine&#8217;s terraces. In the meantime, Sawasiray dug a canal along the side of a hill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, he tried to move water through while working very hard and lovingly, all the while thinking of Pitusiray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Sawasiray called this waterway &#8220;Sonqo&#8221; because he thought it looked like his heart. He took a long time building this symbol of his love, which worked in Kuntisiray&#8217;s favor by enabling him to bring the water first and defeat the others. She ended up making the painful decision to marry Kuntisiray. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a broken heart, Sawasiray was extremely depressed; his sadness increased upon realizing that he was losing his beloved Pitusiray.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He had no idea what to do as several ideas rushed through his head. Using all of his power, he yelled out in pain as he ascended a hill:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\"><em><strong>&#8216;Oh, my Pitusiray&#8230; what will I do?&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\"><em><strong>&#8216;Oh, my Pitusiray&#8230; what will become of me?&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Aftermath<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When thunderstorms and lightning descended upon Calca one stormy night, Pitusiray, thinking of her beloved, rushed in to find Sawasiray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> After they got back together, they decided to go to the range&#8217;s mountains as they no longer wanted to be separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her father became furious when he heard of this and aimed to instill the value of living according to the law in them, since people considered lying and cheating serious faults back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two young lovers&#8217; actions angered the Wiraqocha god, who transformed them into two snow-capped mountains by encasing their hearts in a frozen mantle. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"697\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717619563685-1-1024x481-1.jpg?resize=697%2C327&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717619563685-1-1024x481-1.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717619563685-1-1024x481-1.jpg?resize=300%2C141&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717619563685-1-1024x481-1.jpg?resize=768%2C361&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Today, two snow-capped peaks behind Calca are known as Pitusiray and Sawasiray, while Kuntisiray is located behind these two mountains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Inhabitants and visitors visit Calca to see the two lovers transformed into mountains, watching the whole Sacred Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story is based on a translation by C\u00e9sar Morante Luna from Quechua to Spanish that was included in Rodolfo Sanchez Garrafa&#8217;s book<a href=\"https:\/\/vyddistribuidores.com\/producto\/apus-de-los-cuatro-suyus-construccion-del-mundo-en-los-ciclos-mitologicos-de-las-deidades-montana\/\" class=\"aioseop-link\"> <strong>&#8220;Apus de los cuatro suyos&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> (2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analysis of Names and Meanings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The meaning of names in this story can be understood through the oral tradition.
