However, throughout the expansion of the Inca Empire, it also functioned as a stronghold for this civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This enigmatic archaeological site is located 4,300 meters above sea level, near the Apurimac Canyon. The building&#8217;s name means &#8220;Horn Fortress&#8221; in Quechua, but the locals call it \u201cLlama Pukara\u201d, which is a more appropriate name given that it resembles a llama&#8217;s ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Go?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/destinations\/cusco\"> <strong>Cusco<\/strong><\/a> region has roughly two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. In the rainy season, the rainiest months are January and February, and it lasts from December to April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the dry season, the overnight lows often go below 0\u00b0C, and it is regarded as the coldest season of the year. Despite that, we can assure you you\u2019ll have a great time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get there?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can take a car from Cusco to the Sangarar\u00e1 District. After that, follow the diversion to Punta Carretera. The 8-kilometer hike to Waqrapukara starts here; it will take you around two and a half hours each way and three and a half hours coming back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that the trek\u2019s difficulty is from a medium to a high level of difficulty, as the hike is long and steep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, those with poor health may find it hard to climb to the high altitude where this site is. Perhaps this detail surprises you, as you&#8217;ve visited Machu Picchu before, or you may have heard that it&#8217;s huge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/destinations\/choquequirao\" class=\"aioseop-link\">Choquequirao<\/a><\/strong> is the \u201cMachu Picchu&#8217;s sacred sister.\u201d This is because of its isolated position and design. The other 70% are hidden in deep plantations and underground.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Choquequirao Trek<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach Choquequirao, you must follow a route, known as the Choquequirao Trek, which is truly tough. It&#8217;s at lower altitudes than the Classic Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trek has noticeable ups and downs on the way to the ruins and back.
