Although it is predominant in the central area of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/tips-for-travelers\/all-about-peru-updated-information\" class=\"aioseop-link\">Peruvian<\/a><\/strong> Andes, it\u2019s also spoken in some regions of Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina. The Quechua language also has variations across Peru and the rest of the Andes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to recent stats, there are <strong>over 15 million Quechua speakers,<\/strong> and most of them are in the Peruvian region since over 10 million persons are bilinguals and speak Quechua and Spanish, and the other 3 million are monolinguals who only speak Quechua.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This language is often referred to as the \u201c<strong>Language of the Incas,<\/strong>\u201d but this is a mistaken fact since it tracks back to other civilizations that had preceded this renowned culture. Despite this, Quechua prevailed until the current date, but it became more restricted to isolated rural areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since<a href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/information\/how-to-communicate-in-peru-spanish-tips\" class=\"aioseop-link\"> <strong>Spanish<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and Quechua languages have stood side by side throughout history, somehow, one influenced the other by adopting slang, names, and other words from each tongue. But this doesn\u2019t mean that you can&#8217;t learn some basic words and expressions to help you understand better this ancestral tongue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As aforementioned, throughout history, we\u2019ve seen the development of dialects and how each one influences the other. Therefore, a large number of words are derived from this language. Here are some Quechua words you didn\u2019t know you were using in English and Spanish:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Llama: <\/strong>Apparently, this furry Andean camelid and its name is originally a Quechua word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jerky:<\/strong> It\u2019s a dehydrated trimmed meat, dried in the sun. The word \u201cjerky\u201d derives from the Quechua word <em>&#8220;ch\u2019arki&#8221;,<\/em> which translates to \u201cdried, or salted meat.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Condor:<\/strong> This is the name of the third-largest bird of the Andes. It derives from the Quechua word <em>\u201cKuntur.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poncho:<\/strong> A widely-used word in English to refer to a thick blanket-like woolen fabric. It is also used as another word for a water-resistant coat, \u201crain poncho.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chullo:<\/strong> If you have visited the Peruvian highlands, you\u2019ve probably seen some wool hats with earflaps which is called <em>\u201cchullo\u201d<\/em> in Quechua. It is a widely used word in Spanish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pacha: <\/strong>This Quechua word is used in conjunction with other words, it means earth, but can also be interpreted as world, space, and time. A popular word is &#8220;Pachamama&#8221;, which means Mother Earth or Mother of Time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morocho<\/strong>: It derives from the Quechua word &#8220;muruch\u2019u&#8221;, which is the name of a type of hard corn. However, it is used in Spanish to refer to a dark-skinned person, people with dark hair, twins, and animals with dark skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn Some Quechua Phrases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Quechua language has mainly influenced Spanish colloquialism, there are even more expressions that derive from this dialect and are still used in English. Likewise, we want you to know some useful Quechua phrases that will help you on your trip through the Peruvian Andes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Allillanchu\/Allilanmi<\/strong><br>This is a typical Quechua greeting that means \u201cHello, how are you?\u201d To respond you can easily say \u201cAllilanmi\u201d which translates to \u201cI\u2019m fine, thank you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sumaq Mikhuna<\/strong><br>While visiting the local markets in Cusco, you\u2019ll find some food stands with Quechua-speaking cooks, and what better way to compliment their food than by saying \u201cSumaq Mikhuna\u201d (Sumakj Mijuna) which can be interpreted as \u201cThis is delicious food.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sulpayki\u00a0<\/strong><br>Good manners are part of the base of our society, so make sure to learn this essential word to say \u201cthank you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tupananchikkama<\/strong><br>In the Quechua language, there&#8217;s no exact word to say goodbye, instead, people use &#8220;Tupananchiskama&#8221; which literally means  \u201cUntil life makes us meet again,\u201d. It&#8217;s a beautiful way to say &#8220;goodbye&#8221;, isn&#8217;t it?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quechua Names and Meanings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While traveling through Cusco, you\u2019ll come across many words and names that come from the Quechua dialect, here we have listed the most popular, so you have a better understanding of the meaning and purpose of these locations to the local culture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Qosqo: <\/strong>This was the original name of <strong><a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/destinations\/cusco\">Cusco City<\/a>.<\/strong> In Quechua, Qosqo means navel, which is why the Imperial City of the Incas is often referred to as the \u201cNavel of the World.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Machu Picchu<\/strong>: Etymologically, &#8220;Machu&#8221; means Old; and &#8220;Picchu&#8221; translates to Peak or Mountain.
