In the past, the Inti Raymi was the highlight of the Inca Empire’s social calendar.

The most influential Inca Emperor of all, Inca Pachacutec, established this celebration back in 1412. It was a time for the Incas to thank the Sun God and honor their ancestors.

Later, they’d come together to perform rituals, dance, play music, and make offerings, all decorated with gold and silver.

These days, the festival is as lively as ever! It all begins in Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, where participants dressed as Inca royalty and priests kick off the traditional ceremonies.

Then, the procession makes its way to the Temple of Coricancha, once the richest temple in the empire, before heading to the Sacsayhuamán fortress.

This archaeological site offers breathtaking views of the city.
