We\u2019ll also uncover the exciting activities you can enjoy around this historic hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plaza de Armas through time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, chroniclers tell us that the area where the Plaza de Armas of Cusco sits today was important even before the great Inca culture emerged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its significance grew with Inca Manco C\u00e1pac, who began building the Colcampata Palace between the hills formed by the Saphy and Tullumayo rivers. This marked the start of what would become Cusco\u2019s main square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Transformation of the Plaza<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to archaeologists, millions of years ago, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/cuscos-pumaq-chupan-paccha-inca-legacy-unveiled\/\" title=\"\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> area was a lagoon that they called Morkill. So, when the Incas arrived in Cusco, they settled near a swamp in the future Plaza de Armas area. Inca Sinchi Roca, Manco C\u00e1pac&#8217;s son and successor, helped by filling the swamp with mountain soil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, Inca Pachac\u00fatec completed the drainage by adding stone and sand. This work set the stage for the plaza to become a central hub of the Inca Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Center of Power in the Inca Empire<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Inca Empire, Plaza de Armas&#8217;s origins date back to the 15th century, during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, this emperor was a visionary leader,  transforming Cusco from a modest settlement into the grand capital of the Inca Empire.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of this change was the plaza, originally known as Huacaypata, which means &#8220;Place of Crying&#8221; or &#8220;Place of Rituals&#8221; in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/quechua-words-and-meanings\/\" title=\"\">Quechua<\/a><\/strong> language. The Incas celebrated the Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun, here, an annual event honoring Inti, their sun god. Thousands would gather in the plaza to see offerings, dances, and rituals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, this plaza was the hub for trade and the meeting point of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/the-inca-empires-greatness-the-story-of-tahuantinsuyo\/\" title=\"\">Tahuantinsuyo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Empire&#8217;s four \u201csuyos,\u201d and it was also the starting point for the majestic engineering inca path network, the \u201cQhapaq \u00d1an.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Spaniard\u2019s Arrival and Transformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1533, the arrival of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.viajesmachupicchu.travel\/en\/the-spanish-conquest-in-peru\/\" title=\"\">Spanish<\/a><\/strong> conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro marked a turning point for Cusco and its Plaza de Armas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the strategic and symbolic importance of the square, the Spaniards made it the center of their new colonial city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the Spanish repurposed the plaza&#8217;s Inca structures for colonial buildings. This lovely Baroque church was built where an Inca temple once stood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the Jesuits and the cathedral&#8217;s clergy had a friendly rivalry over the church&#8217;s design.\u00a0The plaza also saw important historical moments.
