The lake is really deep, between 140 and 180 meters in depht, and can reach incredibles 280 meters in some places, with limpid and only slightly brackish waters, and colours from blue to índigo. A sacred site for ancient civilizations, some people say this is the place where that the Inca civilization emerged. Remnants of an ancient people, the Uros civilization, lives in the region and is responsible for the creation of the famous floating islands made of totora (a reed that grows in dense brakes in the marshy shallows).

Actually Lake Titicaca is part of an important nature reserve, called Titicaca National Reserve, with more than 37.000 protected hectares, where it cannot be built or deforested.
