Best Places to Surf in Peru

Most surfers have undoubtedly spent hours viewing videos of perfect waves in paradisiacal locations, and when it comes to experiencing it all, you understand that you have to choose the finest location for you. If that’s the case we highly recommend our country, worldwide famous because of Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca city.

Although Peru is famous for its towering mountains, Andes, and llamas, it has also beautiful and extensive coastlines perfect for surfing. A trip along the Peruvian coast, facing the Pacific Ocean, can be just as extraordinary as any other region in this country full of secrets, cultures, and unforgettable landscapes.

The Peruvian coast is also loaded with stories of ancient civilizations, surf points, tourist attractions, ancient customs, gastronomy, and much more. Peru is located in a privileged geographical position, there are almost 3,000 km of coastline, and receives waves all over the year.

The country has a tradition in the sport and several renowned names have already made history there, like Felipe Pomar, in the 1970s. It’s important to know that despite receiving waves throughout the year, each region has a period when the waves reach their peak, as you’ll see below.

Cabo Blanco: Peruvian Pipeline

Planning the perfect Peru surf trip? Then you should start from the very north of the country, in Mancora, Piura to be exact. Cabo Blanco offers the perfect waves for those adrenaline seekers in Peru and it’s located just 40 minutes away from the beach town of Mancora.

If you’ve been doing your research, you surely know that Cabo Blanco has one of the most legendary waves in the country, known as the Peruvian Pipeline, an intense barrel wave that has become the main reason for surfers to visit this region since the 70s.

Experts describe Cabo Blanco’s waves as reef-break types, these can reach an altitude of 2 to 3 meters. This beach isn’t considered suitable for beginners since it is quite challenging to surf in these waters.

The region has an average temperature of 29°C. The best time to experience this surf spot at its fullest is between March and October when the winds are stronger and temperatures a bit cooler but not such a significant change.

Chicama Beach: Longest Left in the World

If your travel itinerary takes you to northern Peru and you’re looking for the best place to surf in our country, then you must not miss Chicama Beach. It is located in Puerto Malabrigo, only 30 kilometers from Trujillo City. It is considered a surf paradise for having the longest left wave in the world, which is why it has been chosen for many national and international surf championships.

The waves are estimated to be up to four kilometers long, although no one has ever officially surfed that far. If you’re wondering when’s the best time to visit Chicama Beach, it would be between April and October. Keep in mind that the water temperatures are cold during this period since it is the winter season.

Therefore, you might want to wear a 3.2 or 4.2 mm rubber if traveling during this season. However, the weather is mostly sunny in this part of the country with an average temperature of 23°C. Many local and foreign tourists visit this part of the country though it isn’t as crowded as you may think.

There’s so much more to do in this region that you would love to know about! If your travel itinerary to Peru isn’t entirely tied to surfing, you should visit the El Brujo Archaeological Site, which is located one hour away from this beach town.

Makaha Beach: The Best Spot for Beginners

For those who wish to practice surfing for the first time, there’s a special beach located in the Miraflores district in Lima, where you can learn how to surf and tame the waves like a total expert.

There are different surf schools in Lima, some offer their lessons out of the city, while others are located just in the heart of the upscale district of Miraflores. If you’re eager to experience this adventure sport for the first time during your time in Peru, this is the way to start!

Most surfing schools include all the necessary equipment and depending on your physical condition and experience level, they’ll optimize the class so you get to learn even more besides just the basics. The surf lessons in Lima last from 1 to 1.5 hours, you just need to show up, get ready, and let the sea wash all those nerves and worries away.

The Makaha beach has the perfect wave breaks all year round, which is why you’ll be able to spot many surfers from the Miraflores Boardwalk. If you’re feeling adventurous enough, make sure to include this activity in your itinerary!

Lobitos Beach: Another Perfect Surfing Spot in Mancora

Northern Peru is certainly the best region to surf in the country and Mancora certainly holds some of the most iconic surfing beaches in Peru. Lobitos is located about 1.5 hours away from this famous beach town and offers world-class lefts and point break waves all year round.

Lobitos Beach is also suitable for kitesurfing, especially between April and October, when the wind is stronger and more consistent. Likewise, this beach in northern Peru is one of the most sought-after by local and foreign tourists.

As we mentioned above, the weather is generally warmer with an average temperature of 29°C. However, the waves here are very strong and are not suitable for beginners, just like in Cabo Blanco. This endless summer land offers the perfect setting for experts.

Likewise, the beach town of Lobitos grants a sense of tranquility and calm like no other place. So, if you’re looking to disconnect from the world for a few days, this place should be on your bucket list!
